We all love a good bargain. But at what cost?
The supply and demand nature of our shopping industries can lead to adverse outcomes for many. From slave labour to poor working conditions, unsafe practices through to the consolidation of vast profits to a few individuals, our shopping practices need to be viewed through the lens of social justice so that we ensure a fair go for all.
With every dollar you spend you have an impact on the planet and its people – Anna Lappe
We can all make small choices (such as which brands we purchase) which can change somebody’s world. It sounds simple, but by being aware of a product’s supply chain (where and how the elements of a product are sourced), we can have a positive impact on the world.
Shopping ethically means choosing to buy from brands that are transparent about how their products are made – by ensuring there is no forced labour, child labour or exploitation of workers in their supply chains, and that strive to reduce their negative impacts on the environment.
It can be difficult to make sure every purchase is considered ethical, but by staying informed and making positive impact choices, you are making a difference. You don’t have to do all the research on your own. There are many organisations devoted to researching the supply chains of companies and informing consumers.
