The prevalence of mental health issues in Australia has significant social and economic effects on the whole of society. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it is estimated that almost half of Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in time in their lives and suicide is currently the leading cause of death for young Australians aged between 15 and 44. On a positive note, mental health awareness has been increasing over the past few years which has led to the provision of increased education, funding and support services.
