2016 Election Issue – Marriage

An outcome of the July 2 election will be the sudden rise of same-sex marriage to the top of the political agenda. Such are the expressed intentions of the major parties.

The Salvation Army’s Positional Statement on Marriage can be found here.

The Salvation Army recognises that not all people today would agree with this statement. We acknowledge the right of all people to their point of view, to hold that view without being subject to discrimination, and to be welcome in The Salvation Army community of faith. All should have equal employment opportunity and access to social and community services.

We urge you to prayerfully consider your important vote this election. The post-election intentions of the major parties are outlined in the infographic below[1] (provided by the ABC).

Note: A plebiscite is the direct vote of all the members of an electorate on an important public question. Governments can hold plebiscites to test whether people either support or oppose a proposed action or issue.
