Election Issue – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to experience disadvantage and marginalisation within Australia. The 2016 ‘Closing the Gap’ report shows that four out of the six target areas have fallen behind. Another area of concern is the disproportionate rate of incarceration of Indigenous people, which is 13 times higher than that of non-Indigenous people.

We urge you to prayerfully consider your important vote this election. The Salvation Army’s Policy Statement on ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ and the relevant policies of the main parties, listed in alphabetical order, can be found below for your consideration:

The Salvation Army Policy Statement
(esp. pages 26-27):

The Greens

The Labor Party
(note: The Labor Party currently has several different policies that come under the heading of “Tackling inequality and disadvantage”):

The Liberal National Coalition
